Gordon McGarel-Hogg (Service No 1721) was born in Tamworth, N.S.W. around 1892.

Gordon enlisted under the name Gordon Hogg when he was single, 22 year old, and working as a clerk in Wollongong, N.S.W.  Gordon had served 3 years in the Militia.

He embarked from Sydney on HMAT A61 Kanowna with 2nd Reinforcements, 20th Battalion, on 19th June 1915.  After arriving in Egypt Gordon was immediately sent to Gallipoli.  On 24th August 1915 he was admitted to hospital on Gallipoli, having become ill, and was evacuated to hospital on Mudros.

On 8th March he was promoted to Corporal and was sent to France with his unit.  While in France he was transferred to Anzac Headquarters and served from there on the Western Front.

On 8th January 1918 Gordon made a Staturoy Declaration advising the Army that his correct name was McGarel-Hogg.

While in France he met Yvonne Chevillard, and Gordon married Yvonne in Rouen on 16th December 1918. 

On 1st May 1919 he was promoted to Sergeant and served with the Graves Registration Unit during 1919.

Gordon was returned to Australia in October 1919 accompanied by Yvonne.

He was discharged on 24th January 1920.

Gordon died in 1958 and is buried in Field of Mars Cemetery, Ryde, N.S.W.
