William Schwarer (Service No 1473) was born in Dapto, N.S.W.

At enlistment he was 19 years old, single and employed as a fitter.  William had served in the Militia.

He embarked from Melbourne on HMAT A40 Ceramic with 301st Mechanical Transport, 8th Company, on 22nd December 1914.

William was sent to France, arriving there on 15th July 1915 and saw service in England and France with 4th Motor Transport Company.

On 11th August 1916 William was promoted to Corporal, then on 23rd November 1916 again promoted to Sergeant.

He returned to Australia in October 1918 for Special 1914 Leave.

While William was on Special Leave the war ended and William was discharged on 5th February 1919.

In 1920 he married Kathleen Farry and they raised 3 children.
