John Gorton (Service No 5214)  was born at Minmi, N.S.W. in 1884.

At enlistment John was 31 years of age, single, lived at Woonona, N.S.W. and was employed as a labourer.

He embarked from Sydney on SS Makarini with 16th Reinforcements, 3rd Battalion, on 1st April 1916. He arrived in Egypt on 2nd May 1916 and was transferred to 55th Battalion and sent on to France to join the Battalion after it was decimated at Fromelle, arriving on 3rd August 1916.  

John returned to Australia in September 1919 and was discharged on 13th January 1920.

In 1926 he married Margaret Fort at Cessnock, N.S.W. and they raised 3 children.

John  died in Cessnock in 1951.
