Henry William Went
Henry Went (Service No 590) was born in Williamstown, Victoria around 1887.
At enlistment Henry was 29 years old, single, worked as a railway shunter, and lived at Bega House, Keira Street, Wollongong. Henry had served 2 years with the Cadets.
He embarked from Sydney on HMAT A72 Beltana with B Company, 36th Battalion, on 13th May 1916. On 9th July 1916 he arrived in England and joined 54th Battalion in France on 6th October 1916.
Henry saw service on the Western Front and was promoted to Corporal on 1st June 1917.
He returned to Australia with 53rd Battalion in March 1919 and was discharged on 7th July 1919.
Henry returned to work with the railways.
In 1921 he married Lilian Hillier at Newcastle, N.S.W. and they raised 2 children.
In 1932 Henry was working in Cowra when he was hit by a train at Cowra station and seriously injured. Henry died as a result of his injuries on 7th July 1932.
Henry was honoured with a Military Funeral.
