Phineas Beatus (Service No 6185), known as Sonny, was born in Wollongong, N.S.W.  He was the grandson of Phineas Beatus who had a store at Unanderra, N.S.W. for many years.

At enlistment Sonny was 27 years of age, single, lived at Glebe, Sydney, and was employed as a grocer.

He embarked from Sydney on HMAT A8 Argyllshire with 17th Reinforcements, 24th Battalion on 31st October 1916.  He arrived in England on 10th January 1917 and on 3rd March 1917 was admitted to hospital with pneumonia.

He served with the training battalion in England during 1917. On 20th February 1918 he joined 24th Battalion in France.  

On 22nd March 1918 Sonny was admitted to hospital after a gas poisoning attack. His injuries were severe and he was evacuated to hospital in England.

He was returned to Australia in January 1919 and discharged medically unfit on 12th May 1919.

In 1920 Sonny married Flora Stribling but they do not appear to have had children.

He died in 1937 and is buried at Woronora Cemetery, N.S.W.
