Francis Newstead (Service No 1429) was born in Wollongong, N.S.W. arouned 1875.

On 26th January 1906 he married Elizabeth Smith and they had 2 children.

At enlistment, Francis he was 39 years old, employed as a miner, and lived at Mount Pleasant, N.S.W.

He embarked from Sydney on HMAT A38 Ulysses with 1st Reinforcement, Mining Corps, on 20th February 1916.  He arrived in England and was soon in France.

On 13th May 1916 he joined 2nd Tunnel Company, serving with them on the Western Front until the end of the War.

On 5th October 1916 he became ill and was admitted to hospital, however there is no information on Francis' records.

He was returned to Australia in May 1919 and discharged soon after.

Francis died in Bulli, N.S.W.
