Herbert William Kimbrey
Herbert Kimbrey (Service No 269) was born in Bulli, N.S.W.
Hebert married Irene Marion Todd early in 1916.
At enlistment, Herbert was 21 years old, and was employed as a railway shunter, and still lived in Bulli. Herbert had served previously in 37th infantry Militia.
He embarked from Sydney on HMAT A40 Ceramic with 6th Reinforcements, 56th Battalion on 7th October 1916. After arriving in England on 21st November 1916, he was sent on to join 56th Battalion in France, where he arrived on 7th February 1917.
Herbert saw service on the Western Front until he was wounded in action while fighting at Flanders during the 3rd Ypres Campaign on 27th September 1917. He sustained shrapnel wounds to the head and was evacuated to hospital for treatment. Herbert returned to his unit on 24th August 1918.
He was returned to Australia in June 1919 and discharged soon after.
Herbert's wife Irene died in 1917.
Herbert died in May, 1985.
