Joseph Mitchell (Service No 5749) was born in Bellambi, N.S.W. around 1897.

Joseph enlisted as an 18 year old, when he was single, lived at Mount Keira, N.S.W. and was employed as a clerk.  Previously, Joseph had served 4 years with Senior Cadets and 3 months with C Company, 37th Infantry Militia.

He embarked from Sydney on HMAT A55 Kyarra with 18th Reinforcements, 1st Battalion on 3rd June 1916.  He arrived in England on 3rd August 1916 and after training was sent to France, arriving on 13th December 1916.  Here he joined 1st Battalion on 18th December 1916.

Joseph saw service on the Western Front until 20th September 1918 when he was wounded.  He was sent to England for treatment of a gun shot wound to his right leg.

Jospeh was returned to Australia in March 1919 for further treatment.  He was finally discharged medically unfit on 12th March 1920.

Joseph died in 1971.
