James Paine (Service NO 3603) was born in Blythe, England around July 1885.  The family came to Australia soon after and settled at Mount Keira, N.S.W.

James enlisted at the age of 29, at which time he was single and worked as a driver.

He embarked from Sydney on HMAT A60 Aeneas with 8th Reinforcements, 17th Battalion on 20th December 1915.  He arrived in Egypt and was transferred to 57th Battery on 17th March 1916.

The Battery was sent to France and arrived on 23rd June 1916.  James saw service until 15th December 1916 when he became ill and was admitted to hospital.  

After his recovery James was posted to 3rd Army Field Artillery Brigade on10th February 1917 and served with this unit until 8th March 1918 when he was again admitted to hospital sick.

He returned to France on 7th August 1918 and was then posted to the Australian Employment Company on 21st August 1918.

James was returned to Australia in March 1919 and discharged on 25th June 1919.

In 1919 he married Elizabeth Souter at Lithgow, N.S.W and they had one daughter.

James died in Randwick Military Hospital, Sydney, in 1939.
