Percy Mahanay (Service No 620) was born in Sydney in 1888.

Percy enlisted at the age of 27, when he was single, lived in Wollongong, N.S.W. and employed as a fireman.

He embarked from Sydney on HMAT A32 Themistocles with B Company, 17th Battalion on 12th May 1915.  After serving for some time in Egypt he arrived on Gallipoli on 16th August 1915.

On 27th September 1915 Percy became ill and was admitted to hospital in Malta; he was back with his unit on 2nd October.  On 3rd November 1915 he was again in hospital sick and did not get back to his unit until 5th March 1916.

Percy arrived in France with 17th Battalion on 23rd March 1916 and saw service on the Western Front until he was admitted to hospital in France on 21st November 1916 with trench foot.  He returned to his unit on 3rd January 1917 but was back in hospital on 26th January and moved to a hospital in England on 16th February suffering from myalgia.  He did not return to his unit until 8th July 1917.

Percy was back in hospital on 23rd October for a week and finally back in hospital on 14th December 1917.

He was returned to Australia in June 1918 and discharged medically unfit on 30th September 1918.

Percy died in hospital in Sydney in 1926 and is buried at Rookwood Cemetery, Sydney.
