Edward Mahanay (Seervice no 1041) was born in Kiama, N.S.W. in 1895.

Edward enlisted using the spelling of his name as Mahaday (Mahady) as did his brother Percy while a third brother, Frederick, used the family name Mahanay.

When Edward enlisted he was single, 19 years old and worked as a butcher in Wollongong, N.S.W.  Previously, Edward had served in C Company, 37th Infantry Militia.

He embarked from Sydney on HMAT A35 Berrima with C Company, 20th Battalion on 25th June 1915.  After he arrived in Egypt he was sent on to serve on Gallipoli.

After returning to Egypt he was admitted to hospital on 11th February 1916 suffering from epilepsy. This was the end of his active service and he was returned to Australia in May 1916 and discharged medically unfit on 26th July 1916.

In 1919 Edward married Florence North and obtained work as a motor driver.

He died in 1960.
