Frederick Mahanay (Service No 1669) was born in Sydney in 1884.

When Frederick enlisted at the age of 29 he was single, lived in Wollongong, N.S.W. and was employed as an upholsterer.

He embarked on HMAT A49 Seang Choon with 3rd Reinforcements, 1st Battalion on 11th February 1915.  After he arrived in Egypt on 31st March 1915 Frederick was sent on to Gallipoli.   On17th December 1915 he was admitted to a Casualty Clearing Station with influenza.  

Back in Egypt, Frederick was transferred to 53rd Battalion on 26th May 1916 and joined the fighting with them in France on 29th June 1916.  He went on to take part in the battle of Fromelle.

On 29th August 1916 Frederick was sent to a Lewis Gun School.

On 7th December 1916 he was admitted to hospital in England with bronchitis.

Frederick was returned to Australia in August 1917 and discharged medically unfit on 29th November 1917.

In June 1927 he wrote to the authorities asking for a copy of his discharge certificate.

Frederick does not appear to have married; he died on 19th August 1943.
