William Hanlon (Service No 12899) was a 24 year old butcher from Austinmer, NSW at the time of enlistment. He had come to Australia with his family from England prior to this.

William listed his Mother, who was living in Moore Street, Austinmer as his next of kin.

William embarked on HMAT A71 Nestor with 4th Reinforcement on 9th April, 1916. He arrived in France on 5th June, 1916 and served on the Western Front with 14th Battery, 5th Artillery Brigade.

In 1917 and 1918, William was admitted to hospital sick for short periods but no reason is given.

On 21st January, 1919, William married Florence Durling in Surrey, England. William returned to Australia in September, 1919.

William was discharged on 19th January, 1920 and there is no further information on his file.
