William Halliday (Service No 126) stated on his enlistment documents he was a single 37 year old coal miner from Austinmer and that he was born at Sandhurst, Victoria. He was actually 50 years old at the time. He named his sister Mrs Sweeney of Austinmer as his next of kin.

He embarked on HMAT A38 Ulysses with Mining Corps, 1 Company on 20th February 1916. After a stop in Egypt he arrived in France on 5th May 1916 and saw service on the Western Front. On 24th December he was transferred to 1st Tunnelling Company.

On 19th July 1917 he was admitted to hospital with Trench Fever and sent to England to recover. His true age was then discovered and due to his health he was returned to Australia in October 1917. William was discharged medically unfit on 5th February 1918 with chronic rheumatism.
He died in 1930.
