Alfred, also known as Arthur, was 17 years old when he enlisted.  He was single, and worked as a farmer at Albion Park, N.S.W.  His enlistment papers name Arthur Johnson of Albion Park as his guardian and his enlistment papers state his parents as whereabouts unknown.  A report in the paper about his welcome home states he indicated his gratitude to Mr and Mrs Johnson for being the closest he had to parents.

Alfred embarked from Sydney on HMAT A67 Orsova with 15th Reinforcements, 7th Light Horse on 11th March 1916.  After arriving in Egypt he joined 2nd Light Horse regiment on 14th April 1916, and was admitted to hospital the same day with mumps.

After being discharged from hospital he was transferred to Anzac Mounted Division on 25th June 1916 and saw service in Egypt and the Middle East.

On 8th September 1916 he was again admitted to hospital, this time with influenza.  He returned to his unit on 12th November 1916.  On 8th March 1917 he transferred to the Medical Corps and was posted to 2nd Australian Stationary Hospital, where he served till the end of the War.

On 27th May 1917 he was admitted to hospital with measles but returned to duty on 7th June 1917. On 17th October 1917 he was admitted once more to hospital suffering an abscessed jaw.  In August 1918 he had another bout of influenza.

Alfred was returned to Australia in December 1918 and discharged medically unfit on 4th May 1919.

He returned to the Illawarra district of N.S.W. after the war and went on to study for the Ministry, serving as a minister in a number of parishes in NSW, Qld and Victoria.

On 24th January 1941 he married Myrtle Whelan.

Arthur enlisted in the 2nd World war on 27 May 1940 as a Private and served in the Australian Army Medical Corps.  He was promoted to Captain and was discharged from the 107th Aust General Hosp. on 11 Nov 1943.
