Henry Gunning Webb
Henry Webb (Service No 2) was born in Somerset, England. He saw service with the British in India and South Africa.
In 1898 he married Annie Carter and they had 2 children. Henry came to Australia some time after 1911, leaving Annie and the children in Portsmouth England. Henry spent time in Victoria after he arrived in Australia. He met Evelyn Bissell with whom he had 2 children, the first in 1913 and the second born in 1915.
Henry enlisted when he was 39 years old, and living at Albion Park, N.S.W. Despite his relationship and family with Evelyn, Henry listed his wife in England as his next of kin.
Henry embarked from Sydney on HMAT A16 Star of England as the Regimental Quartermaster with Headquarters, 1st Light Horse Regiment on 20th October 1914. The troops arrived in Egypt in early December. On 9th May 1915 Henry arrived on Gallipoli and served there until he was evacuated to hospital in Egypt.
Henry was diagnosed with cronic rheumatism and shell shock and returned to Australia in April 1916. He was discharged medically unfit on 8th August 1916.
Henry remained in Australia with his second family and died in 1938.
