Raymond Murray (Service No 930) was born in Wollongong, N.S.W. in 1893 and attended Wollongong Junior Technical School.

Raymond enlisted when he was 21 years old, single, and employed as a carpenter. He embarked from Sydney on HMAT A72 Beltana with D Company, 30th Battalion on 9th November 1915.

The troops arrived in Egypt on 11th December 1915 and Raymond was sent on to France with 30th Battalion, arriving there on 23rd June 1916.

On 20th July 1916, D Company were tasked with carrying ammunition to the front attacking troops at Fleurbaix in France.  Raymond made a number of trips across no-man's-land, receiving some minor wounds, but was able to continue fighting.  Eventually, however, Raymond was hit by a shell and killed.  He was buried on the front line, in a portion set aside as a "Burial Trench'.

The location of Raymond's burial site is unknown; he is commemorated on the VC Corner Australian Cemetery and Memorial, Fromelles, France.
