Pritchard was single, worked as a biograph operator, and had served 4 years in the CMF when he enlisted.  Although Pritchard claimed to be 18 on his enlistment papers, his birth records show that he was born in 1899, meaning he was only 16 on enlistment.

He embarked from Sydney on board HMAT A14 Euripides with 11th Reinforcements, 3rd Battalion, on 2nd November 1915.  The troops arrived in Egypt on 5th February 1916.  On 13th February Pritchard was transferred to 55th Battalion.

He arrived in France on 29th June 1916 and took part in the battle of Fromelle.  On 17th January 1917 Pritchard was admitted to hospital due to dental issues, and returned to his unit on 25th January 1917. His dental issues again had him admitted to hospital on 15th October 1917 for 10 days.  A third stay in hosptial began on 18th March 1918 when he was suffering from scabies.  He returned to his unit on 22nd March 1918.

On 24th May 1918, while carrying out duties as a machine gunner with 10 Platoon, C Company, the dugout he was sleeping in was hit by a shell, and Pritchard was wounded.  He was evacuated to 14th Australian Field Ambulance for treatment of shrapnel wounds to his abdomen, left thigh and hand.
