Patrick Francis McMahon
Patrick McMahon (Service No 158) was born in August 1890 in Wollongong, N.S.W.
Patrick enlisted when he was 26 years of age. At that time he lived at Hamilton, N.S.W., was single and worked as a locomotive driver. Patrick nominated his father, who lived at Balgownie, N.S.W. as his next of kin.
He embarked from Sydney on HMAT A18 Wiltshire with 1st Railway Corps on 7th February 1917. The troops arrived in England on 11th April 1917 and Patrick joined 60th Railway Company in France on 14th May 1917.
Patrick saw service on the Western Front, and was promoted to Corporal.
On 2nd August 1918 he was admitted to hospital sick, but rejoined his unit on 18th August 1918. Patrick became ill again and was admitted to hospital on 22nd January 1919.
On 28th April 1919 Patrick was admitted to 30th General Hospital at Calais dangerously ill with pneumonia, and died 2 days.
Patrick is buried in Les Baraques Military Cemetery, Sangatte, France: Plot XVIII, Row A, Grave 10.
His service and sacrifice is commemorated on the Balgownie War Memorial.
