Frederick/ Fredrick McMahon (Service No 4501) was born in Fairy Meadow, N.S.W. around 1887.

At enlistment, Fred was 27 years old, single, employed as a coal miner, and lived at Balgownie, N.S.W.  Fred had served 6 months with the St George Rifles.

He embarked from Sydney on HMAT A71 Nestor with 11th Reinforcements, 18th Battalion on 9th April 1916.

On 4th July 1916 he was admitted to hospital in England however there are no details and no discharge date on Fred's war records.

On 29th October 1916 Fred joined the 45th Battalion in France as a Lewis gunner and saw service on the Western Front.

On 7th June 1917 he was at the battle of Messines Ridge when he was killed in action. Again, Fred's war records have no details relating to his death.

There is no known grave for Fred;  he is commemorated on the Menin Gate Memorial at Ypres, Belgium, and on the Balgownie War Memorial.

Fred's brother Private Patrick McMahon (Service No 158) also served.
