Peter McKinnon (Service No 4847) was born in Woonona, N.S.W. around 1892.

When Peter enlisted he lived at Dunoon via Lismore, Northern N.S.W.; he was single, 23 years of age, and worked as a farmer.

He embarked from Brisbane on HMAT A73 Commonwealth with 15th Reinforcements, 9th Battalion on 28th March 1916.  The troops arrived in Egypt and were then sent on to France, arriving there on 14th October 1916.

On 16th October 1916 he was admitted to hospital with the mumps and re-joined his unit on 17th November 1916. 

On 7th May 1917 he was wounded in action and evacuated to hospital in France for treatment of shrapnel wound to his arm, returning to his unit on 4th June 1917.

A more serious wound at Passchendaele occurred on 6th October 1917 when he was evacuated to England for treatment of a shrapnel wound to his left arm.  He did not return to his unit until 16th June 1918.

On 23rd August 1918 Peter was killed in action.  There are no details about his death on Peter's service records. 

Peter is buried in Heath Cemetery,  Harbonniers, France: Plot III, Row E, Grave 14.

Peter's brother, Robert McKinnon (Service No 4848), also served.
