Alexander McKenzie (Service No 5761) was born in Wollongong, N.S.W.

When Alexander enlisted in Fremantle, Western Australia, he 37 years old, married, lived at Fremantle, W.A. and worked as a lumper.

He embarked from Fremantle on HMAT A48 Seang Bee with 18th Reinforcements, 16th Battalion on 18th July 1916 and arrived in England on 9th September 1916.

On 28th November 1916 he was admitted to hospital suffering from influenza.  He was discharged on 20th December, but was back in hospital again on 26th December.

Alex joined his unit in France on 13th February 1917.  While fighting with C Company, 16 Battalion at Bullecourt on 11th April 1917, he was wounded and taken prisoner.  He had sustained a gun shot wound to his left thigh.

Initially, Alex was listed as missing in action, but the Germans advised of his condition and location on 25th April 1917.

There are a number of post cards on his file sent to his wife Elizabeth advising her of his wound and recovery.  He asked her to send socks, pants, shirts and cigarettes.

In October 1918 he fell ill with influenza and pneumonia, and was on his way to hospital from the Prisoner of War Camp when he died 12th October 1918.

Alex is buried in Cologne Southern Cemetery, Germany; Plot X, Row C, Grave 7.
