Stanley McCarthy
Stanley McCarthy (Service No 1790) was born in Kangaroo Valley, N.S.W. and attended Kangaroo Valley Public School.
When Stanley enlisted at the age of 30, he was single, lived at Port Kembla, N.S.W. and was employed as a baker.
Stanley embarked from Sydney on HMAT A8 Argyllshire with 4th Reinforcements, 2nd Battalion on 10th April 1915. After arriving in Egypt he was sent to Gallipoli, arriving there on 26th May 1915.
Stanley was wounded during the Lone Pine battle on 8th August and evacuated to hospital in Egypt for treatment of a bomb wound to his hand. This was a common wound at the time. Stanley saw no more service on Gallipoli and rejoined his unit in Egypt after the evacuation on 26th January 1916.
Stanley arrived in France on 28th March 1916. He was killed in action at Pozieres on 24th July 1916 and there is no known grave.
He is commemorated on the Australian National Memorial at Villers-Bretonneaux, France.
