A member of the first contingent, he embarked from Sydney on HMAT A14 Euripides with B Company, 4th Battalion on 20th October 1914.  The troops arrived in Egypt in early December and after training, Leslie arrived on Gallipoli on 25th April.  He survived the early fighting but was wounded on 8th May 1915 and  evacuated to hospital for treatment of a shrapnel wound to his hip.  Leslie returned to his unit on 28th September 1915 and remained until the evacuation.
