Frederick Hargrave (Service No 5807) was born in Armidale, N.S.W. around 1870. He attended Armidale Public School and then Newington College.

Frederick enlisted when he was 44 years of age; he was employed asa a horse driver, and nominated his brother William. of 'Figtree Point', Point Kembla, N.S.W. as his next of kin.

Frederick embarked from Sydney on HMAT A40 Ceramic with 16th Reinforcements, 18th Battalion on 7th October 1916.  The troops arrived in England on 21st November 1916 and Frederick joined his unit in France on 27th January 1917.

Frederick served on the Western Front and was fighting with a carrying party from 4 Platoon, A Company in the Polygon Wood area when them men were hit by a shell.  He was evacuated to 3rd Australian Field Ambulance for treatment but he died soon after on 19th September 1917.

Frederick is buried in Menin Road South Military Cemetery, Belgium; Plot II, Row A1, Grave 11.
