William Hodges (Service no 2157) was born in Wollongong, N.S.W. and attended Murwillumbah Public School in northern N.S.W.  On 20th December 1912 William married Jean Wilson at Byron Bay, N.S.W and the family settled in Queensland. 

William and Jean had a son when William enlisted in Brisbane at the age of 23.  William was working as a carpenter, and the family lived at Terranora via Chinderah, N.S.W.

William embarked from Brisbane on board HMAT A26 Armadale with 4th Reinforcements, 25th Battalion, on 18th September 1915.  The troops arrived in Egypt before being sent on to Gallipoli, arriving there on 8th December 1915.

William returned to Egypt after the evacuation and went to France with C Company, 25th Battalion, arriving on 19th March 1916.

William served on the Western Front until admitted to hospital sick on 6th November 1916.  He returned to his unit on 25th November 1916.

On 8th February 1917 William was wounded and evacuated to a Casualty Clearing Station for treatment of gun shot wounds to his chest.  He died from these wounds on 20th February 1917.

William is buried in Dernacourt Cemetery Extension, France: Plot VI, Row A, Grave 2.
