He embarked on HMAT A18 Wiltshire on 22nd August 1916 with 19th Reinforcements 13th Battalion with his brother Albert.

The brothers appear to have served together, even going to hospital with trench foot on the same day. William recovered and returned to his unit on 30th September 1917. While fighting at Passchendaele on 20th October 1917 he was buried by an exploding shell and killed. He has no known grave and is commemorated on the Menin Gate Memorial in Ypres Belgium.
