Richard Hird (Service No 1549) was born in Fremington, Yorkshire, England about 1889. He moved to Australia and at the time of enlistment was a single 25 year old miner living at Balgownie.

Richard embarked on HMAT A32 Themistocoles with 1st Reinforcements, 19th Battalion on 12th May 1915 and saw service on Gallipoli. After the evacuation he was sent to France, but was unfortunately killed in action on 27th July, 1916 at Poziere. He has no known grave but is commemorated on the Australian National Memorial at Villers -Bretonneaux , France.
