Private Archibald Hewitson (Service no. 948) was born in Lismore in June 1887. In 1911 he married Caroline Makin and when enlisted he was described as a married 27 year old fettler living at Kiama.

Archibald embarked on HMAT A41 Bakara on 22nd May, 1915 with B Squadron 6th Light Horse and saw service on Gallipoli until he was evacuated sick on 30th November, 1915. He was transferred to Railway coy Engineers after a knee reconstruction in March 1916. He then saw service in Egypt and Palestine until 28th March, 1918 when he was reported wounded and missing.

Captured by the Turks and taken to hospital in Damascus for treatment and then on to Turkey as a POW, Archibald was repatriated to Alexandria on 6th November, 1918. He returned to Australia in December 1918 and was discharged medically unfit on 3rd May, 1919.

In 1939 Archibald and his wife were divorced. He is remembered on the Wollongong Presbyterian Church Roll of Honour along with his brother John Hewitson (Service no. 269).
