Colonel William Love Kirkwood was born 10th September, 1882. In 1910 he married Annie Campbell and obtained a commission in the Australian Army Medical Service. He enlisted in the AIF in June, 1915. The next five years saw him travel on various hospital ships as a Physian and Surgeon. He saw service in Egypt in No 2 AS Hospital and as Commanding Officer of 14th Australian General Hospital.

Regular promotions took him to the rank of Colonel. In 1919 he was Mentioned in Dispatches for service between 19th September, 1918 and 31st January, 1919.  On 3rd June, 1919 he was awarded a Military OBE. He returned to Australia in September 1919.

In 1939 he was back in uniform as the Commanding Officer of No 102 Australian General Hospital at Tamworth and saw service again for the Second World War.

Dr Kirkwood is remembered on the Wollongong Presbyterian Church Roll of Honour & the Balgownie War Memorial 1914-1918.
