John Heslop (Service No 1606) was born in Durham, England.

John enlisted on 11 October 1915, when he was 37 years old. At that time John lived at Oakey Park, Lithgow, and was married to Selina, with whom he had six children. His occupation was horse trainer and he was placed with the 2nd Australian Remount Unit, part of the Australian Light Horse Regiment, as a Trooper.

On his Attestation Paper of Persons Enlisted for Service Abroad, John states he had previously served as a volunteer with the Field Artillery in England, for 3 years.

John's Unit, the 2nd Australian Remount, left Sydney on 10 November 1915 on the HMAT Orsova A67. This Unit was disbanded on 1 April 1916. On 9th July 1916 John was transferred to to 1st Remount Unit.

John returned to Australia on 2nd September, 1916 due to illness, returned to duty on 16 October 1916, but was subsequently discharged as medically unfit on 12 February 1917.

On 9 March 1917 John re-enlisted and joined the Field Artillery Reinforcements with the rank of Gunner. John was now 39 years old.

On 22 March, 1918, John was again discharged as medically unfit.

John's grandaughter says John lived in Gwynneville and later served in World War II.

John's service is commemorated on the Balgownie War Memorial 1914-1918.
