Private Mitchison (service no. 823, 7792) was born in Mount Kembla.

At the time of enlistment he was working in Newcastle. He embarked on SS Te Anau on 20th November, 1915 for Rabaul. He served for 272 days with D Company of the Naval and Military Special Forces Tropical Corps. He was discharged at his own request on 17th May, 1916.

On the 17th September, 1917 he re-enlisted in Townsville and was allocated to the 15th Battalion, but he did not leave Australia as he was discharged on the 3rd November, 1917 with malaria.

In 1925 he married Alice Taylor.
