Private Albert Miles (service no. 1966) was born December 1897 in Barrow-on-Furness, Lanarkshire, England. He came to Australia with his family in 1901. The family settled in Mount Kembla, and Albert along with his brothers gained employment at the mine. As a young man Albert spent time in the cadets and 37th Illawarra Infantry.

Albert enlisted in the AIF at 18 years old and embarked on HMAT A54 Runic. He arrived on Gallipoli with C Company 18th Battalion on 29th September, 1915 and served there until the evacuation. He served on the Western Front with the Battalion until the end of the war.

On 31st May, 1918 he was wounded in action receiving a gunshot wound. He was again wounded on 3rd June, 1918, this time gassed. He returned to Australia in April 1919 and was discharged on 23rd July, 1919.

In 1920 he married Elsie Harrison and had 5 children.

Albert was one of 3 brothers who served. His bother Alfred (service no. 4530) was killed in France, and James (service no. 4529) served in the 2nd Battalion.
