Sapper James Johnson (Service no.4855) was born in Surry Hills circa 1893.

Prior to enlisting he was living at "The Gunyah", Kembla Heights and working as a miner. He embarked with 13th Reinforcements, 1st Pioneer Battalion on HMAT A38 Ulysses on 19th December, 1917. James saw service in Italy and on the Western Front.

On 20th May, 1918 he transferred to the 4th Pioneer Battalion. He does not appear to have been wounded and he returned to Australia in August 1919. He was discharged from the AIF on 1st October 1919.

James was still recorded as living in Kembla Heights in 1953.
