Private John Garrett (Service no: 407) was born in Mount Kembla about 1892.  He was working as a miner before enlisting in the AIF at Surrey Hills, Victoria.

He embarked with the first contingent on HMAT A24 Benalla on 19th October, 1914 as a member of D Company 8th Battalion.

After training in Egypt he went to Gallipoli and landed with the second wave on the 25th April. He survived the landing only to be later wounded during the Battle of Lone Pine. He was evacuated from Gallipoli with shell concussion on 6th August, 1915.

He was returned to Australia in December 1915 and discharged medically unfit with chronic otitis media on 25th July, 1916.

In 1919 he married Ivy Adkins in Victoria where they resided with their family till his death.
