Private John Bourke (Service no. 6030) was born in Stanmore circa 1893. When he enlisted in the AIF his address was Mount Kembla Post Office and he was described as a 23 year old married driver. Prior to enlisting he married Agnes Foye in 1914.

He embarked with 18th Battalion on HMAT A11 Ascanius on 25th October, 1916. John Bourke served on the Western Front and was involved in a lot of fighting. He was wounded in action on four occasions. The first being on the 29th July, 1917 where he received a gunshot wound to his arm. On 19th September he was again wounded but the injury not specified. On 30th May, 1918 his record states he was gassed. And on the 3rd September he received a gunshot wound to his neck.

He was returned to Australia in January 1919 and on 23rd February 1919 was discharged from the AIF medically unfit. After the war it appears he had moved to Lake Cargelligo, New South Wales.
