Details:

William Dungey (Service No 3911) was born in Mount Kembla. When he was 13, his father, Frank Dungey, was killed in the Mount Kembla Mine Disaster of 31 July, 1902. After leaving school William also became a miner.

William joined the AIF on 14 August 1915, and embarked with the 1st Battalion, 12th Reinforcements on HMAT Mooltan on 11 December, 1915.

After training in Egypt he sailed with his unit to France in March 1916.

The battalion was engaged in the fighting at Pozieres and sometime between 22 and 25 July, 1916, he was wounded, receving a gun shot wound to his right eye. William was evacuated to the First Canadian General Hospital at Etaples, France, but died from his wounds on 16 August, 1916.

William is buried at Etaples Military Cemetery France, Plot 9, Row E, Grave 12.

His medals were sent to his mother and his will named her his sole beneficery. Mary Dungy had a long but sad life, having lost her husband and both her sons (William's brother, John, was also killed in action).
