Leslie William Souter was born in Surry Hills, NSW.

He was employed as a labourer when he enlisted on January 13, 1916. He was 22 years of age and lived in Wollongong with his wife at the time, Martha Ruby Souter (nee Spears). He sailed from Sydney on April 13, 1916 aboard SS Makarini.

Souter was a Private in the 2nd Battalion, 16th Reinforcements. Records from the Australian National archives note that he was wounded in action in May 1917.

He was discharged at the end of the war and returned to Australia on March 28, 1919.

Leslie died on December 22, 1964 in Ingleburn, Sydney.
