Details:

Phillip Franklin (Service No 3528) was born in Randwick, Sydney, N.S.W 1897. As a child he attended Unanderra Public School.

When he enlisted at Warwick Farm, Sydney, N.S.W., he was only 18 years old, and was working as a labourer and unmarried. His mother, who lived at 5 Islands Road, Unanderra, was nominated as his next of kin.

Phillip had spent 4 years in the Cadets before he joined the AIF.

Phillip embarked from Sydney on HMAT A17 Port Lincoln on 13th October, 1915 with the 11th Reinforcement, 4th Battalion.

On 6th March, 1916, Phillip was transferred to B Company of the 56th Battalion to serve on the Western Front. While stationed in France, Phillip was hospitalised a number of times due to illness.

On 24th September, 1917, while engaged in heavy fighting, Phillip was wounded in action, receiving a serious shrapnel wound to his head. He was evacuated to England for treatment and on 20th December, 1917, was returned to Australia per H.S. 'A54'.

Phillip was discharged, medically unfit, from the AIF on 14th May, 1918.

Phillip Franklin and his brother Cyril are commemorated on the Unanderra Public School Roll of Honour. Their father Walter also served.
