John Thomas Holland (Service No 457) was born in Mount Kembla around 1892.

He was 23 years old, single, and working as a shunter in Newcastle, N.S.W. when he enlisted on 25 January, 1916.

John's unit, B Company, 34th Battalion, embarked from Sydney on 2 May, 1916, on HMAT A20 Honorata.

John served on the Western Front with the Battalion.  He was wounded in action receiving a gun shot wound to the thumb and palm of his left hand. Records show he was admitted to hospital on 21 October, 1917, for treatment.

John had a number of unauthorised absences while he was stationed in England and when he married a local girl, Agnes Hannah Little, on 17th February, 1919, at St Catherine's Church, Canton, Cardiff, Wales, the reason for his absences without leave became apparent!

John returned to Australia, per HMAT Themistocles, on 12 June, 1919, and was discharged from the AIF on 10th October, 1919. Agnes joined him in Australia.

John Holland died in1967.
