Sapper Henry Gill (Service no: 7835) was born in Salford, England in August 1880. When Henry was 12 years old the family came to Australia and found their way to Wollongong in 1892.

Henry was working as a miner in Mount Kembla at the time of his enlistment.

He embarked on HMAT A71 Nestor with 3rd Tunnelling Company on 21 November, 1917 just a month after enlisting.

He was fined 2 days pay on 24 October, 1917 for being late on parade.

He saw service on the western front as a miner.

While in England he met and married on 6 March, 1919 a girl from Salford. Elizabeth Heeds was a 22 year old weaver and she returned to Australia with Henry in August 1919.

Henry was discharged from the AIF on 2 November, 1919. Henry and Elizabeth had 4 sons but on 3 May, 1934 Henry married a second time to Annie Featherstone and they had a daughter.
